Jackets Galore at Scarlett in Fredericksburg

When I was a little girl, my love of traveling around Texas first came from looking through Texas Highways Magazine. The pictures were what captivated me most of all. The magazine would first arrive addressed to my daddy’s medical practice where his patients would be the first ones to glance at them. When a new issue would arrive, we were then allowed to bring the old one home. I would read it cover to cover. And then go back and read through them again and again. It was so fascinating in my then child’s mind how all of these different topographies could be in the state of Texas. I wanted to explore them all. It was so different from my little world in small town East Texas.

Now as a grown up, I am still working on seeing all of Texas. It’s big, so it might take me awhile. Our next new discovery with the kids is hiking in Big Bend National Park, hopefully with a stay in Marathon. Until then, we are content with day trips throughout the Hill Country.

On Sunday, we drove up to Fredericksburg to eat at Rebecca Rather’s restaurant called the Pink Pig.  Of course I blogged about it because it was pretty much our only reason for our little Sunday after church drive. Despite our lingering at the restaurant for a few hours because it is one of those places that you really don’t want to leave; we decided to stroll the streets in downtown while it was still daylight. Now, I had no big expectations about shopping while my kids were with us. They are usually good for about two stores and then they start asking, “Are we done yet?” I have found that the key is to keep them moving with a goal in mind. We were on the hunt for family Christmas ornaments. We each get to pick out our own ornament for the tree every year. The hunt was on from store to store.

But I got a little distracted by this store.

It’s called Scarlett.

 

 

 

 

I walked in and fell in love.

It’s got so many jackets y’all.

The Sassy twin even let me look around for about 7 minutes.

I only wish I could have stayed longer to browse and actually try something on!

Sigh.

 

 

We kept on going and after about 30 minutes, we hadn’t found the right ornaments and the kids were ready to go home.  This is the point in each shopping excursion when I fantasize about hiring a sitter for a weekend away with my man or coming up for a girl’s day of shopping.  We finally found what we needed at the Christmas Store, go figure.

As we were paying, the sweet checkout lady told us about the ice skating rink at the Marktplatz on Main St. This new bit of information sure did perk them up so we decided to check it out.

As we approached the square downtown, the first thing we saw was the German Christmas Pyramid. In all my travels to Fredericksburg, I had never been there during the holidays. It was breathtaking.

 

And so was the Community Christmas Tree.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Eisbahn Holiday Ice Skating rink is located behind the trees and the gingerbread village. The skates are available for a rental fee of  $10 a day. Everyone seemed to be enjoying it all.

 

 

 

There was a line to get in so we didn’t get to skate.

Since the sun was starting to set, it was time for us to go back to San Antonio and face the reality of going back to school the next day.

We enjoyed our short visit.

There are so many other holiday events scheduled in Fredericksburg from now and until New Year’s Day. Our family has so much scheduled already that I doubt we will get back there to take it all in. Here’s hoping that you plan your travels a little better than I did this trip!
