Did you have a wonderful Christmas? I hope so.
My family didn’t travel to East Texas and Dallas for the first time in forever. It was less stressful but we sure did miss seeing our siblings and cousins.
Once the kids realized that their cooking challenged mom was going to be the one in the kitchen this year, they asked for me to make them sausage bread. It is so simple and easy that I can’t even mess it up!
I got the recipe way back in the 90’s when we had a pot luck lunch at work. I loved it so much that I made it for clients when I would give early morning training classes for loan officers. There was never a time after a seminar that someone didn’t ask for the recipe. I still get Christmas cards from former clients that tell me that they are still making it for their family on special holiday mornings too!
I lost the recipe a long time ago but it’s so simple that you really don’t need to write it down!
The whole family participated this year in making it. I had one kid chopping up the fruit salad with her new chef’s knife and another one shredding the cheese. They all fought over who was going to cut up the french bread and pull out the inside so they could eat the crumbs.
I might be a horrible cook but I am a master at delegating!
RECIPE:
Loaf of French Bread –
1 pound of Browned Sausage or Veggie Crumbles (Morningstar)
3-4 cups of Shredded Colby Jack Cheese
3 stalks of chopped green onion
Brown the sausage (any brand or variety) Drain the grease. Allow to cool entirely.
*We use veggie crumbles to cut down on fat and calories. Be sure and season it like sausage with lots of sage, garlic, cayenne and salt and pepper.
Cut the french bread in half and pull out the center and tear into crumbs in a mixing bowl.
Combine cooled off sausage, onions, bread crumbs and grated cheese in the large bowl together.
Fill both sides of the hollowed out french bread with mixture and put the bread back together.
Wrap the bread tightly with foil. You can also use toothpicks to hold the bread together during baking. (don’t forget to take them out though!)
Bake for 45 minutes at 275 degrees.
Allow to cool before slicing with serrated knife.
Serve with fresh fruit and orange juice or mimosas!
Enjoy.
And Happy New Year!
Stay Sassy Y’all.
