Friday nights are “family fun nights” at our house. We let the kids pick where we order pizza and the movie we watch on Netflix. Lately, we have been taking the pizza to the pool. They usually pick places like Papa John’s, Papa Murphy’s or Pizza Hut. Every now and then my husband and I use our veto power as parents to pick the place when we have grown tired of the aforementioned chain pizza places! Last night was one of those nights.
We wanted to try a new place that had recently opened up in an HEB shopping center near our house. They claim to be a “New York Pizzeria” which is pretty rare in our neck of the woods. We usually go to Grimaldi’s for our New York pizza fix but there is usually a big line out of the door. It took me about ten minutes to find their phone number. Neither of us could remember the name of the place, only that it started with a “y.” After successfully finding what I thought might be the place, I discovered that it has numerous locations in Austin with good reviews on “urbanspoon.” This is their very first location in San Antonio. We were very hopeful that we might have a real pizzeria a lot closer to our house.
Their website has a menu and a list of specials. We chose the one with a medium pizza for $2.99 when you buy a large specialty pizza. They have delivery available but I decided to pick it up since my children were starving after a long day at an amusement park.
The interior of the restaurant is pretty small, much like a typical New York pizzeria. They had lots of bar stools lined up along the counter space that faced the parking lot. This is the only indoor dining seating. It is very obvious that the focus is on takeout or delivery of the pizza.
I had to rush to take pictures of the pizza. We ordered a medium cheese and a large half veggie and half margherita pizza. The pizza didn’t make it home with a pretty presentation. They make their margherita pizza with grape tomatoes. I have never seen this before and it seems to be too top heavy for the ride home. We were able to spread the cheese around again and it still tasted pretty good. The veggie side had lots of fresh vegetables including broccoli so you really felt like you were getting your vegetable serving for the day with each bite.
The sign of a true New York style pizzeria is a simple cheese pizza. It was wonderful. The crust had the perfect consistency and bubble ratio with the char from the stone oven on the bottom of the crust. It was cut into slices large enough for you to fold in to take a bite.
We all agreed that this pizza was indeed worthy of the “New York style” label. All the kids want to move it up in the family fun night rotation, we might just make it the number one choice. You can’t beat the taste, quality and price of this new pizza place, at least in the part of San Antonio where we call home.
They have a pretty extensive menu with salads, calzones, wings, pasta and sub sandwiches. There are numerous lunch specials for as little as $4.99 with drink included. We will go back for lunch so we can sample their salads and pastas which are also an option for this low price.
Their website is Yaghi’s in case you are in need of a New York style pizza fix.
Welcome to the neighborhood Yaghi.
What took you so long?
Stay Sassy Y’all.
