When I was trying to decide where we could go for our 20th wedding anniversary getaway, the only requirement was that it should be quiet and relaxing. With a very busy house of 3 kids, it’s a luxury!
In case you haven’t been to this little part of the Hill Country in awhile, you will be in for a nice surprise. We found out very soon that Comfort is so much more than their 4th of July parades.
The GPS says that Comfort, Texas is exactly 37 miles from our driveway. After staying two nights, it felt more like a million miles away!
We booked a room at the Hotel Faust after seeing all the pictures on their website and reading the great reviews on various travel sites. Although the pictures can show you the colors of the walls and give you some idea of what your room might be like; there is no way that it conveys the personality of this hotel.
It’s historic, elegant, unique, welcoming and laid back all at the same time. I took so many pictures that I will share them on a separate post!
Since our stay began on a Wednesday night, we were told that there was only one restaurant open downtown on that day. We were more than curious to taste what kind of pizza would come out of a kitchen that was once a gas station.
Comfort Pizza can keep up with any big city restaurant any day of the week! The wood-fired and hand tossed pizza was delicious as were the salads that we each ordered. Local and organic produce is only used in all of their cooking.
The next day’s adventure included an afternoon trip to a winery, but first we ate lunch across the street at High’s Cafe. I don’t think I’ve ever seen employees and customers so happy to be together. And after tasting the food and seeing the interior, I can see that this little spot in town is both a celebration of food and people!
No wonder it has been around since 2005.
The short drive out to Bending Branch Winery was an adventure with roads that had twists, turns and breathtaking views of the Hill Country.
We were more than ready to sample the grapes from their fairly new vines.
We were again met with welcoming employees that wanted to tell not only their story but of the town and community of Comfort. It didn’t feel as much like a winery but as if you might be at a friend’s house that was sharing their knowledge of the fruit of the vine.
I think my favorite part was pairing it with different chocolate truffles that were made from a local baker and infused with the wine.
Wine and chocolate was almost a perfect afternoon!
What made it even more perfect was a little shopping when we drove back into town. We quickly discovered a new home store that had recently opened called Huckleberry’s. The two ladies that own the store have long talked about having a place to showcase their love of decorating.
And I do believe they have succeeded.
Not only did we enjoy their new space, they insisted that we go visit Blackbird Antiques to see their luxurious bedding. She also mentioned that we would take special interest in a few of their employees.
Well, she was right y’all! They have the cutest pugs in residence to help you with your bedding selections.
OK, not really, they didn’t move from their naps but I took a picture so I could show the kids!
After some rest and relaxation we were ready for dinner.
At the suggestion of those sweet ladies at Huckleberry’s we headed out to Alamo Springs Cafe.
I can’t believe that after all of our years exploring the Hill Country, we had never been to this place.
It’s located in the middle of nowhere, seriously, we thought we might not be able to see our car to get back in from the lack of lights out where we parked!
Did I mention that you can stick around to see the bats leave their cave?
As for the food, it’s insanely good. For instance, we had an appetizer of roasted garlic with goat cheese. The sandwiches were served on jalapeno bread that was spicy and sweet at the same time.
I could go on and on but you just need to go, trust me on this! Go because sassy says so! You will eat there and be happy!
As for the rest of our trip, we had another quiet night in our log cabin. Which sounds like we might be roughing it but the bathroom is more like a luxury spa.
We had to eat breakfast next door at High’s because that place just welcomes you back like an old friend.
Can we just stay one more night? Will the kids even miss us?
We then reluctantly drove the short drive home to San Antonio.
And whether you are celebrating a milestone anniversary or simply driving up for the day, I am sure that you will feel the comfort that surrounds this little piece of the Hill Country.
Stay Sassy Y’all.

When can we go for a girls’ weekend? I’ll be ready.

It would be a perfect weekend girl’s place. The hotel has some bigger rooms. They said that people book the entire hotel for weddings and other events. Just tell me when Janie!

We would love to stop by! I am sure it is something our artist loving children would appreciate. They already want us to take them to see the pugs!

You’ve sold me! It is practically up the street from us. I’ve been to their Christmas Fair. . .but not a romantic weekend (ok, a romantic DAY would be nice!) with the husband. Thanks for the recommendation. The pictures are awesome!

I bought some earrings at Danielle Boutique and I have already gotten tons of compliments on them. I couldn’t remember the name of the store or I would have mentioned it!And we LOVED Miss Giddy’s and I didn’t have my camera with me or I would have shown their great space where you can hang out and eat pie!! I still can’t believe how amazing Comfort is! We can’t wait to go back and relax!
