This past weekend, my family was up for a little adventure since we had a long Easter holiday. Now, my husband used to be a planner until he married me. I’m up for anything and like to do things at the spur of the moment.
On Saturday, we piled in the car with the camera and the only destination being somewhere to take pictures of the kids in the bluebonnets. Of course, I hadn’t come up with any suggestions by the time we reached the interstate, so the big Stud decided to drive around those turnarounds back and forth until we all came to an agreement on somewhere to eat. Our teenage boy wanted meat. He’s a carnivore to the extreme and the twins wanted a salad. And so the negotiating began as my husband kept going round and round.
Is this normal family behavior?
Under so much pressure to come up with a satisfactory compromise, I finally thought of a brilliant solution! We could drive out to Texas Pride Bar-B-Q in Adkins and also find some places to take pictures of the kids in the wildflowers. Everyone was happy with my choice.
Next, I might try solving peace in the Middle East!
I have been wanting to try this restaurant out for about ten years. And after we ate there on Saturday, I wonder why it took us so long!
They have been featured on an episode of Diner’s, Drive In’s and Dives so I don’t know that they it needs much of a restaurant review. I will just give you the breakdown on what you will expect after you make the long drive from San Antonio.
First of all, it is in the middle of nowhere! As you drive down the winding roads off of 1604, you will notice this large compound of buildings in the distance. You have reached your destination as well as the feeling that you have stepped back in time.
This former gas station and general store, sets the mood of pure nostalgia with its decor. You wait in line as each customer is helped by the friendly staff. Each order is sliced and served up in recycled bread trays. Be prepared to wait. You will be glad to have the extra time because it might take you that long to make your final selection.
Each dinner with one meat comes with two sides. You also have a choice of wheat or white bread. We ordered ribs, turkey and brisket for our meat. We made sure to order a variety of sides so we can sample everything. We tried green beans, macaroni and cheese, german potato salad, cole slaw, cheesy potatoes. The only disappointment was the macaroni and cheese. It was a little dry. The turkey was my favorite. It was so moist and full of flavor.
The bar-b-q sauce comes in a mild and spicy version. And it is pretty spicy! We ordered one of each kind of dessert and shared it with all five of us which is a pecan and a peach cobbler. They are both so good they will make you cry and wish the serving size was just a tad bigger!
You can either choose bottled soft drinks or they also have lemonade and sweet and unsweet tea available. The lemonade is a little tart but I mixed it with unsweet tea and it made for the perfect “Arnold Palmer!”
There is seating inside with televisions as well as a huge outdoor area. The Friday night fish fries take place outside near the music stage area. I can only imagine how much fun this place is on the weekend, sipping beer, eating good food and listening to music.
There are lot of places for the kids to run around but be warned that the gated playground only has one swing and one of the steps on the ladder to the slide is broken.
You might want to pack a soccer ball so your kids can kick that around in the enlosed area.
The interior eating area is hip, rustic and retro.
It all comes together perfectly!
They also have a game room with air hockey and other video games. I think they have thought of everything to entertain kids of all ages.
If you are looking for something that is off the beaten path with wonderful food and atmosphere, Texas Bar-B-Q is the place. It seems as if the minute you arrive, you completely relax and are in no hurry to drive back to the big city.
Not only did our family enjoy the food but we loved the experience.

And as an added bonus, may you find that perfect bluebonnet spot!
Stay Sassy Y”all.
