I started going to the gym again about two and a half years ago. It is the longest time that I have been consistently working out and it feels wonderful. I wish I could say that it was my incredible discipline and focus but I honestly think in a large part, is my entertaining gym mates. I have several friends that have moved on to the “oh so trendy” gym that is more like a country club but it is three times more expensive and a lot further for me to drive. I am quite content with my current workout facility. The silver sneaker club meets there in the morning so hence my nickname of the geriatric gym. I always know what day they meet by the amount of Buick LeSabres and Cadillacs in the parking lot. There is usually the same crowd and they come dressed to the nines and are heavily perfumed and in full make up and lipstick for the social hour at the coffee pots. They are women after my own heart. They then move on to the actual workout, or at least some of them do. They carry their purse with them to and from the equipment and in their lap at all times. You can always tell if there is a new guy in attendance because the women typically swarm him to assess his marital status. These retirees know exactly what they want and go for it! I can only hope that I am this active and social when I reach my 70’s and 80’s. They are truly an inspiration and make my day. When I go work out at night and the gym turns into the 20 something college demographic,I find it rather boring, so I try to go in the morning as often as possible. I guess it is true that you do become more interesting with age, like fine wine and Betty White. I aspire to become a silver sneaker too,but with rhinestones and a feather boa. Now, where’s my purse, I need to hit the gym!
