One of the many ways I tried to change things up during the pandemic was buying fresh flowers for the house on a weekly basis.
At first, it felt so decadent. And then I realized that Trader Joe’s and Costco have small bunches for decent prices. It became a habit pretty quickly. I got used to the smell of star gazer lilies. Their scent floods an entire room. They are a favorite and I had them in my wedding bouquet and on the 3 tier cake.
I also picked hydrangeas, daisies and sunflowers from time to time.
I love peonies too. It’s hard to find them at the store because they are so seasonal. The most popular ones are in pink and the color that I have been used to and bought over the years.
I found these red peonies at Trader Joe’s on Sunday. At first, I wasn’t going to buy them because they had weird black dots on the bulbs and I didn’t think they would bloom very well.
Boy was I wrong. It was the best $8.99 I have ever spent!
It’s hard to do these flowers justice. They change on an almost hourly basis. They become more and more beautiful as the petals open up.
The colors even change from day to day.
It is truly breathtaking.
My teenagers even noticed how mesmerizing these five little flowers have been over the past few days.
I have often wondered lately about the permanent effects that the pandemic will leave on all of us.
I am sure it won’t be all bad. It made many of us see the beauty in little things.
Like watching hummingbirds in the backyard.
Walking the trails on Sunday mornings.
Exploring new recipes.
Hosting neighbors in your driveway.
Doing Zumba with your friends in the street.
Getting to know all your daughter’s teachers on Zoom.
Taking the long way home.
Discovering new kinds of flowers that bring you joy.
And taking time for the things that really matter.
Like one other.
Stay Sassy Y’all
