Last week when I attended the opening performance of Monty Python’s Spamalot at the Woodlawn Theatre, I was looking forward to a night of great laughs. I had no idea that I would spend most of the drive home talking about the singing!
We met my friend and fellow blogger, Jen Eskridge and her husband Rob for a night out on the town. She had never been to the Woodlawn Theatre and was looking forward to seeing the Deco District where it is located. And I was still gushing over seeing the Producers a few months ago. In short, we were ready to be entertained!
Spamalot is a musical that is loosely based on the classic film comedy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It is full of whimsy, flying cows, fog machines and confetti. And about half way during the first act, the Lady of the Lake makes her appearance.
At this point in the play, while Lady of the Lake was belting out the song, “Come With Me,” I started looking for my Playbill to see who that voice belonged to; I was captivated! Is this supposed to happen at a comedy?
When it was time for intermission, my friend Jen wanted to talk about her performance as well. We were both impressed and wanted to know how a mother of four had time to rehearse for a play. We are both working mothers of three children and know all too well how hard it is to juggle schedules.
Megan Hicks DeYoung is the powerful voice behind Lady of the Lake. This performance is her first at the Woodlawn Theatre. She has a degree in vocal performance from Hope College. She is a current member of the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. Her favorite roles so far in her career have been Janis Joplin in “Beehive” and the narrator in “Joseph.”
I had the chance to visit with Megan about her ability to manage her home life as a mother of four children. They range in age of 6 to 12 years of age. She admitted that it isn’t always easy to fit in all the rehearsals and performances. Her family is all very supportive and it somehow seems to fall into place.
Since moving to San Antonio six years ago, she has spent the majority of that time raising her children at home. Only recently has she started to perform in our local theatre community. She has been able to maintain the strength in her voice by singing at church. I can only imagine the spirit being lifted in that building on a weekly basis!
If you have a chance to see Spamalot at the Woodlawn Theatre, I am sure you will be captivated by the marvelous performance of Megan DeYoung. Not only does she have a beautiful voice but she has an amazing family that wants to share her many talents with San Antonio.
I know of a couple of working mothers that can’t wait to see her in the next performance. We not only admire her gift of singing, but her ability to maintain a balance at home.
Bravo Megan. Bravo.
Stay Sassy Y’all.
