Listen to Your Mother!

Does this sound like good advice?

Well it is. And it’s also a brand new production making its way to San Antonio on April 23 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

I know all of this because I was convinced to audition a piece of work  that I had written by a friend who knew I would need a little nudging.

I’m shy y’all. And when I did my reading, I had tears streaming down my face and I was a big, hot mess. There’s just something so vulnerable about telling your story of motherhood out loud. I had never done it before that moment.

When I got back in the car after the audition as I was trying to salvage the rest of my makeup, I thought I could just cross this one off my bucket list: auditioning for something and getting turned down. CHECK.

A couple of weeks later, I got an email saying that I had made the cast. And then I panicked a little, or a lot.

I watched some YOUTUBE videos of prior productions in some of the 41 cities that have already played host to Listen to Your Mother. I was starting to feel a little better about my decision and actually getting excited! We had our first full table reading and rehearsal this past weekend. Most of us were total strangers when we first walked through the door. We read our stories for over 90 minutes while laughing, crying and nodding our heads in agreement of the words we were hearing. Although, we all came from various backgrounds, different ages and had stories that were so vastly different, we left our first rehearsal as friends.

There is nothing like the bond of motherhood.

All of these women are such incredible writers and storytellers. I know you will love hearing them all as much as I did. It is going to be an event to bring your mothers, aunts, sisters, girlfriends and grandmothers. It is so uplifting, sweet and real. And it’s the very first one for San Antonio in our beautiful Tobin Center.

My sister has already made plans to come down from East Texas to attend the show. She might be the only one in the audience that can understand my twang. I wonder if they’ll need subtitles?!

Anyway, we noticed that the show is also the same day as some of her favorite Fiesta events. She has to get her annual cascaron and gordita fix or her life is a little out of balance!

The plan is for her to go the King William Fair early in the morning until it starts to get too crowded. The Listen to Your Mother show starts at 2:00 and lasts for about 90 minutes. This leaves plenty of time for us to walk to the Museum Reach and attend the 10th Street River Festival at the VFW. It is one of my favorite events. It’s laid back and you can bring your own lawn chairs to soak in the people watching.

So if you have friends and family in town for Fiesta, you might want to bring them nearby to hear some stories and then your Fiesta events will have more meaning! Inspirational partying, yes, that about sums up our San Antonio!

I promise to start practicing more so I can make it through mine without crying. It’s a good cry but just knowing someone is recording it for all eternity is a little bit scary.  And then there’s the whole make up and puffy eyes thing.

A ticket is about the same cost of one of those fancy movie theatre seats. This is way better because it will be held in San Antonio’s ultimate theatre, the Tobin.  Click here to purchase tickets.
