There is nothing in life that quite prepares you to hear the words, “one of your twins will be born with Down Syndrome.” Our wish as a family is that those in the medical profession could break the news in such a way that expecting parents would choose life and be able to experience the magic that we do on a daily basis with a simple smile that melts your heart like no other.
Being the parent of child with Down Syndrome is a gift. What society has depicted as a negative stereotype is so much further from the reality. When I went to my very first parent support group meeting when I was five months pregnant with twins, one of which I knew had Trisomy 21, I expected doom and gloom. What I experienced was the exact opposite. Not only did I see love and pride from parents as they told each of their children’s latest accomplishments, I immediately became a member of the special needs community who accepts people for who they are regardless of their physical, emotional or mental limitations. I found out what pure love really means and the faces that go with it…..our hearts are full.
