My husband came home with a flyer from Run Wild Sports in the Pearl Brewery not long after I was laid off from the most stressful job of my entire career. There is just something about clients screaming at you because your loan guidelines are changing by the hour that tends to make your heart rate go up.
For once in my life, I didn’t make excuses like,” I don’t like to sweat” or “I don’t look good in workout clothes” or “I have 3 children.” Something inside told me that the timing was right and I needed to get back those years off of my health that the mortgage meltdown had just taken from me. After all, my Mother of Multiples friends were doing the full marathons while their twins were young so surely I could do a half marathon. I then convinced two of my fellow mortgage friends to suffer with me because I am nice like that.
The first few weeks were hard and I so wanted to blow off those 6am Saturday morning alarms but as the weeks went by and we felt better and stronger it actually became…..wait for it…..enjoyable! Where else would I get the time to chat with my friends about anything and everything for hours without interruption on our long training sessions and take in the beauty of San Antonio on foot.
It was the first time in a long time after becoming a mother that I put myself first and actually carved out time on a regular basis for me. Yes,me, the me that got lost in the delivery room 13 years ago with the birth of my son. Guess what? The world didn’t come to an end if the house wasn’t perfectly clean or the kids ate cereal two nights in a row.
We walked more than we ran but we did it.
We finished a half marathon and it felt good.
One of my friends that finished the first half with me has even gone on to become a Zumba instructor and is close to losing 100 pounds in the process.
I will never break records or even attempt a full marathon but I will keep participating in half marathons. It keeps me in the gym and on task for training for the next one. I lost 20 pounds for the most recent race of the San Antonio Rock and Roll and hope for 20 more by the Dallas Rock and Roll Half Marathon in March.
My husband has been running half marathons for years and he finally convinced me to join him with a little flyer. I am glad I took him seriously this time.
After all, you get a big, blingy necklace at the end….I’ve got four and counting.
Stay Sassy Y’all

The right husband, at the right time, with the right flyer WOW! If you feel as good as you look in that picture you need to keep adding to that collection of big blingy necklaces. Kudos to the new Zumba instructor I’ll be watching DWTS. What you do for yourself you do for your family. What a great way to spend time with friends!

Well he’s the right husband always! It took me awhile to figure out that the kids will be OK and will actually learn from watching you be active and big kuddos to Run Wild Sports for making us slow people feel very welcome in their training program! I give the Zumba instructor your message Becky!
