When I was growing up, our family spent time together sailing on Lake Tyler. And then when our daddy bought a little airplane, we spent weekends out at the airport. We affectionately referred to it as, “the Kilgore International Airport.” It was so little that I used the runways for driving practice when I was learning how to drive. My daddy gave me the keys to his Datsun pickup and instructed me to, “Keep an eye out for a plane that might want to land and just pull over!”
Oh, the perks of small town life!
Now many years later, my family of five is enjoying the game of golf together. And the big Stud has waited years and years for all of his kids to enjoy a sport that he loves so much. After all, the family that golfs together stays together and has to be quiet while they are doing it. Who knew that would be a bonus?!!
We took a little trip last weekend in an even smaller town than Kilgore to explore a “newish” course called, Vaaler Creek. The guys went ahead of us to tee off with some friends and I brought the twins so we could explore the development in Blanco that has an equestrian center as well. The Hill Country in March is a little piece of heaven. The bluebonnets and paintbrushes are in full bloom right now. The further I drive up 281, the lower my blood pressure gets!
It took awhile for us to get back to the golf course from the main entrance of the Rockin’ J Ranch subdivision but when we finally found it, all the girls in my car said, “Wow, that’s pretty!”
We found the guys as they were finishing up the 18th hole. Even though it was a chilly and windy day, they thought the course was a great experience and planned on coming back .
We decided to have a late lunch in downtown Blanco and soon discovered that there are a limited number of restaurants open downtown so late on a Sunday. We decided to give Oak Creek Cafe a try. We were enticed by the live music that we could hear from the parking lot around the town square. We got a nice recap of the guy’s morning on a new golf course for them. Since they all played well, they were pretty chatty! And when our food arrived, some of us were dancing to the tunes while eating fried oak and the restaurant’s unlimited free supply of pinto beans! How is that for a Hill Country experience?
Sassy Tips: It’s a shot maker’s golf course and requires accuracy. Bring some bread to feed the ducks because they expect to be fed at one of the holes(can’t remember which one) and will not let you pass until you do so! If you eat in town, pay attention to the hours of the operation of the restaurants because they vary wildly! The golf course has condos available for rent for reasonable prices in case you have a serious golf addiction. If you have younger kids that won’t go the entire 18 holes, Blanco State Park and the Hill Country Science Mill are close by. The golfers can golf and the kids can play and there will be peace, love and harmony throughout the land.
Here are some pictures that I took of the beautiful course. It truly is a relaxing place to visit whether you golf or just sit under one of the big oak trees.
Stay Sassy Y’all.
