Pancakes.
I bet you just smiled.
There’s just something about pancakes that conjures up happy thoughts! And this past weekend, we found the happiest pancake place in San Antonio!
Pancake Joe’s is located near Jefferson High School and close to downtown off of Donaldson Avenue. It’s in a strip center that has no signage from the road. It took us awhile to find it but we were determined since it had come highly recommended by friends. I knew it had to be around somewhere because there were so many cars in the parking lot. (directly across from the Dollar General Store)
Since the parking lot was so full, we were expecting to wait a little bit. It turned out to be about twenty minutes which is still fairly reasonable in the minds of our children. The promise of pancakes can work wonders for just about any member of our family.
The interior of the restaurant is rather small. There are pictures on the walls that make it seem much larger. Music is constantly playing in the background. It adds to the atmosphere and seems as though you are eating at someone’s house. How can you not be entertained by an impromptu performance to the tunes of Marvin Gaye at the table next to yours? We were singing right along. It has been a long time since we’ve seen fellow diners and total strangers so happy to be eating together!
Our waitress was new so she didn’t know the menu very well. It is massive and offers a wide assortment of breakfast and lunch items. We stuck with the traditional choices and the items that indicated it was a speciality of the house. She kept coming by to clarify what we had ordered. She was so sweet and apologetic about it that it was hard to be put off by the delay.
When our food finally made it out together, we dug in with soulful anticipation courtesy of those Marvin Gaye songs.
At exactly two bites into her meal, our daughter asks us, “When can we come here again?”
We promptly replied, “Real soon!”
Pancake Joe’s makes some serious food and in a family, fun atmosphere.
Be prepared to wait in line. It is so worth it.
The address is 1011 Donaldson Ave. San Antonio, TX 78228. Phone number is 210-785-9007. They are only open for breakfast and lunch. I couldn’t find their website if they have one.
Tell them that you “Heard It Through the Grapevine” about their food. (that’s a Marvin Gaye song, get it!)
Stay Sassy Y’all.
