I have to admit that when I first heard the news that TNT was bringing the old Dallas TV series back, I was skeptical. I just didn’t want them to mess with a formula that had worked so well. There are so many people in my generation that spent every Friday night in front of the television to watch the latest episode of Dallas. Before the invention of a VCR or DVR, it was necessary to plan your schedule around your favorite TV show; and Dallas was a favorite to a lot of my friends. We loved it not just for it being about a family that was in the oil business, growing up in Kilgore, everyone you knew had a job in some form that involved the oil industry, even more so today. It was also fun to guess where all the places are that they had shot the latest episode; somewhere in Dallas that you might have shopped or eaten lunch. Life in the big city while growing up in a small town was always exciting. The TV series Dallas allowed the world to see what we already knew growing up in the oil fields. Although it might have been a little over exaggerated. we all knew that Texas was full of lots of colorful characters.
Last night, I tuned in to watch the two hour premier episodes of Dallas. From the sound of the same familiar opening music to the closing of the wedding scene using a song by the recent artist, Adele, I was hooked. I think they have blended the original characters with the new, younger generation perfectly.
I don’t watch that much TV these days because I don’t have time. My guilty pleasure used to be tuning in to an episode of Real Housewives of “FILL IN THE CITY” but lately, they all just grind on my nerves.
I am so glad that I have found a new summer guilty pleasure. Dallas is down right enjoyable, even if they don’t have big hair anymore!
Here are some of the reasons why I loved it so much. I didn’t want to give too much of the plot away, in case you haven’t had a chance to see it.
*Bobby. He is so sweet and kind. He has preserved well over the years too. I cried when he cried while he was talking to J.R. in what may or may not have been been a real coma from clinical depression.
*Annie. Bobby’s wife. When she loaded that shotgun to chase the intruder out of the house and didn’t blink an eye, I saw about a 100 of my East Texas friends that would have done the same thing. They probably would have fired a warning shot to scare him though. She is strong, sweet and doesn’t whine. I love that about her!
*Sue Ellen. She didn’t have much air time but just the fact that she has gotten it together after being such a hot mess all these years to be considered to run for Governor is intriguing to say the least. I can’t wait to see what turned it all around for her.
*J. R. There was something about seeing him eat dinner at his assisted living center that just cracked me up. He is just so wonderfully evil. You can just tell that Larry Hagman is having a ball playing him again…..now if he would just trim those eyebrows…they are so distracting!
*John Ross. I this part was cast perfectly. He is so mean and kind of creepy. Need I say more? I love that they show what the younger generation relies on, like texting and emailing. J.R. ‘s line about needing to see people in person to close a deal and not using technology is so true. He has a lot to learn from his Daddy.
*Christopher. Why can’t the good guys find true love? Why can’t he be given a business venture that will work? I think this was my favorite new character. Mostly because he is awfully nice to look at and sweet too. Guilty pleasure at its finest!
*Elena and Rebecca. John Ross’ and Christopher’s love interests. Why can’t the Ewing men find smart, beautiful and successful women that don’t have ulterior motives? I guess it wouldn’t make for such interesting plot twists! I hope they dig deeper into these two young women’s character a little more in future episodes.
*Southfork. It sure did look pretty all gussied up for the wedding. I hope they don’t sell the ranch. It just wouldn’t be the same.
I will be humming the theme song in my head until next Wednesday night. I am gladly going to tune in again. I have found an old and new guilty pleasure; Dallas.
Thank you TNT for reminding me of my youth.
It makes me smile.
Stay Sassy Ya’ll.
