When I was home over the Christmas holiday, I stopped by one of my favorite restaurants with some of my family.
My sisters and I had the intention of doing a little bit of shopping and then stopping to eat for lunch. We wanted to pick out some books for my sister Janie’s elementary school library. The teachers at her school had donated money in our mom’s name to purchase books. She wanted the younger girls in the family to participate in picking them out.
Since Kilgore doesn’t have a bookstore of its own, we headed over to the big city of Longview.
It has a population of over 70,000 people, isn’t that just huge!
Honey, they even have their 2nd Starbucks in the new swanky Target!
Let me tell you a little bit about how things happen when my sisters get together.
We talk a lot. And when we haven’t seen each other in awhile, we talk even more.
We were supposed to leave at 10am but by the time we got to my other sister’s house it was 11:30. And then when we picked my niece up and went to my other sister’s house, it was 12:30. By the time we were on our way to Longview with everyone in the car it was 1:45 pm.
We called Café Barron’s to see how long they served lunch and they said 2:30.
Whew, chicken salad crisis averted!
Café Barron is located in the far corner of a shopping center on the busy part of the loop.
It used to be called Barron’s Bookstore, but like everything else made of paper, they closed that part of the store down.
It now sells high-end women’s clothing, house wares and unique gift items.
Thank goodness the menu at the restaurant hasn’t changed.
Their lunch menu has lots of salads, sandwiches, and wraps.
They serve the most delicious sourdough bread with whipped butter. It has the perfect crunchy crust. I always have to have their fresh brewed mango iced tea because you need something tasty to wash down all that bread!
Our group went with salads and soup and the chicken salad sandwich. The maple pecan salad is made with green apples and pecans that are sweetened with a little bit of sugar that makes it crunchy too.
One of us ordered it with grilled chicken on top.
Here is a picture of the caesar’s salad.
I put the younger girls in charge of taking pictures of the food. I didn’t have the fancy camera with me so they took these pictures with my iPad. After all, we have to train these future sassy bloggers. And when the waitress came by to ask if we saved room for dessert, one of my 7 year-old twins asked if they had a dessert menu!
I guess food critics have no minimum age requirement!
Out of sheer guilt, we only ordered one piece of cake for the entire table. The German chocolate cake was moist and not too sweet. It is amazing how much we can agree when it comes to chocolate.
The waitress was wonderful and gave us the perfect amount of time to chat. We didn’t feel rushed even though we were there way past serving time.
We finally made it to the bookstore to pick out some books. I told Janie that we should buy ten editions of The Giving Tree and call it a day. Makes you appreciate that she is a teacher and I am not! Don’t y’all just love that book? Saying the title even makes me cry! Every library should have a 100 copies in my opinion!
We finally finished up our business in the big city!
Now we had to start the sister drop off when we got back home to Kilgore!
From house to house, we had to go back in and catch up and see what the guys did while we were gone! I told the big Stud that we would only be gone 2 hours. It took us 5 hours to pick out books and eat lunch! What is not to love about time with your family during the holidays!
In case you find yourself in need of a place to eat in Longview, Texas, Café Barron’s is one of my favorite places!
It is the perfect sassy girl destination!
They let you chat all you want to and then some!
Their website is BARRONS.
I think I’ll go call one of my sisters!
Stay Sassy Y’all.
