I was out on a long overdue date night with the husband on Friday night. We finally went to see the movie Bernie which was playing at the Bijou at Crossroads Mall. It is actually now called Wonderland of the Americas but I still haven’t made that name change in my head.
The movie was hysterical. It could be because I grew up 40 miles from Carthage, Texas but so many of my friends that had never even heard of Carthage and a couple that had grown up in New York City (gasp) thought it was one of the best movies they had seen in a long time too! I even had to stay through the rolling credits because I didn’t want to miss a single thing and needed time to freshen up my mascara which was now running down my face. I was crying actual tears from laughing so much. The big Stud loved the movie too and he grew up in the suburbs of Dallas.
When we got ready to walk back to our car, we had to go through a different exit because the stores were now closed. We walked right into the Balcones Heights Jazz Festival which was being held in front of the mall area. Steve Cole was on stage wooing the crowd with his saxophone. The music made us want to stop and listen. We were able to hear about three songs before the end of his set. The crowd wanted an encore and so did we!
These free concerts are in their 19th year and has been at the Wonderland of the Americas location for the last few of them. It was our first time there and it was by complete accident. I was so glad to literally stumble upon this fantastic musical event.
We took some pictures with our phone. Please excuse the quality. I wanted to give you some idea of the setting.
The stage is set amid the waterfall in front of the entrance.
There was a cool breeze.
It was perfect.
You are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs and relax and enjoy the music.
It wasn’t too crowded.
There was a food truck there and other types of vendors.
Beer was available for purchase and they had cooling fans on.
The festival is held every single Friday until August 3rd.
We will definitely be back for another night. We might even see the same movie again.
Tears from laughter and relaxing music under the stars;
I can’t think of a better night out with my man.
