Last year on September 5th, my day began like any other day.
I struggled to get the kids out of bed because they were still adjusting to the start of a new school year. I raced my daughter Catherine into class just as the tardy bell rang. I met a colleague and friend for breakfast. I ran a few errands and then it was time to pick up the kids from school.
It was just another day. I would have even called it rather insignificant.
A simple phone call from my brother changed that seemingly ordinary day into one that I will always remember. A day I will never forget.
Aren’t significant days supposed to be extra special? Days that you have circled on your calendar?
The day I got married was pretty significant.
And the day I gave birth to my son.
The day the twins were baptized was also a rather significant day.
Today, one year later, I celebrate my mother.
A woman of true significance.
She saw the significance in everyone; even if they would never see it in themselves.
Our family has gotten on with our lives while leaning on each other and being thankful for God’s grace.
It is in God’s divine plan that we will all ultimately be together again.
And until the day that God calls us home, we remain a family.
A family born.
A family raised.
A family nurtured.
A family loved by a woman of significance.
And for this, I am this I am eternally grateful.

Mary Ott indeed was a very special lady. I had the honor of working for Dr. Ott and Mary. Always said of all the women I would like to have patterned my life after, Mary Ott would have been one of the top two. Debbie Peterson Spruill
