Cafe’ Barron’s

When I was home over the Christmas holiday, I stopped by one of my favorite restaurants with some of my family. My sisters and I had the intention of doing a little bit of shopping and then stopping to eat for lunch. We wanted to pick out some books for my sister Janie’s elementary school library. The teachers at her school had donated money in our mom’s name to purchase books.  She wanted the younger girls in the family to participate in picking them out.       Since Kilgore doesn’t have a bookstore of its own, we headed over to the big city of Longview. It has a … [Read more...]

The Jingu House Restaurant

My family has lived in San Antonio long enough to recall a time that the Japanese Tea Gardens were in disrepair and not open to the public. It had been such an historic landmark since opening in 1915. It seemed odd to not be able to visit while you were near the San Antonio Zoo or Brackenridge Park. When it did finally reopen in 2008, I made a vow to myself that I would try and visit this scenic and unique tourist attraction at least once a year.           So far, I have gone with my family to have their photographs taken among the huge waterfall, … [Read more...]

Two Step In for an Unforgettable Experience

Nestled among the hustle and bustle of 1604 and a retail shopping center is an oasis of great food. Never have I been more surprised about a restaurant than I was last week when I met someone for lunch at Two Step at their suggestion. What I had planned as a quick lunch soon turned into over two hours of one of the most pleasant dining experiences I have had in a very long time. My lunch companion and I were having such a relaxing time on the patio that we were both almost late for our next appointments.   The building itself is the renovated Ruempel homestead built in the 1850's. … [Read more...]

Z Tejas Grill~Cornbread is just the Beginning

I think I squealed with delight when I first read in the newspaper that Z Tejas was opening up a location in San Antonio. It has been one of my favorite restaurants in Austin for a long time and I would take clients there when Austin was in my sales territory. It was always consistently good and I was never afraid to take someone out to talk business and risk being disappointed by their food or service.         Wild Mushroom Enchiladas         I am happy to report that the San Antonio location has not disappointed … [Read more...]

Green Restaurant~Pretty on so many Levels

When you first walk into the new location of Green Restaurant at Wurzbach and NW Military you are sent into a sensory overload of pretty. I would love to find out who designed the decor in the restaurant because it is just extraordinary. I was taking pictures of the light fixtures and the bathroom walls just to get some ideas for my house. To say it is aesthetically pleasing is an understatement. The food is not your usual fare since it is a vegetarian restaurant but don't take it off your list of places to try if you are a serious carnivore because there is something for everyone. My … [Read more...]

Two Bros BBQ Market and One Playground

I will drive a million miles to get to a restaurant with a playground....OK, maybe not a million but across town is a certainty and I finally was able to try out Jason Dady's BBQ place.  Unfortunately, I think the best thing about the place was the playground. I really wanted to like it since I love his other restaurants but there was just not much there for me to love. First of all, there is nothing green on the menu and you can't count the wedge salad which is a hunk of iceberg with dressing on it or cole slaw slathered in mayonnaise.  You have to order in bulk it appears to get … [Read more...]

La Gloria~Where the green sauce has kidnapped my will power

I have been going to La Gloria at the Pearl Brewery since it opened its doors and still cannot get enough. I blame it on the "green sauce"(see picture) It is perfection in a bowl with chips that you have to ask for because this is street food of Mexico where chips are not common. Be sure and ask and you will not regret it,maybe the calories but not the taste. I would try to duplicate it at home but then you would miss the experience of your fellow diners asking each other what they ordered and offering one another bites. Total strangers, locals, tourists who all come together to experience … [Read more...]

Papouli’s Review

My kids love food almost as much as the hubby and I do and we have both been on diets and watching what we eat while training for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon. (don't be that impressed because we are really, really slow) As a compromise we picked Papouli's Greek Grill for lunch. ( We ate at the Huebner location which is in a strip center and decorated simply/ The kids had the tilapia fish platter which they liked but they really loved the rice pilaf and greek salad that came with it and were begging for more so next time we will be sure to order the rice a la carte! The … [Read more...]
