Swimming with Confidence

As a mom, I always worry about my kids and their safety. Besides making them aware of "stranger danger", the next thing on my list has been teaching them how to swim at a very early age. Lucky for us when we moved from the Dallas area to San Antonio, we chose a neighborhood with a swim team. Little did we know what a great choice it would be for our then 4 month old boy. As much as I was determined to teach him how to swim, he was determined to not learn! I tried private lessons over several summers and switching off with various family members in hopes that our head strong 4 year old … [Read more...]

Divine Catering is Truly Divine

When we were spending time with family in East Texas last week, we ate a place that my sister suggested. We had a busy morning of talking and the men had been out golfing in Longview. We knew they were sure to be hungry. And we were sure that we weren't going to cook lunch!  Who wants to turn on the oven in this heat? Not these sassy sisters! Divine Catering has been turning out some serious soul food since 2009. The  restaurant is located in a small building near the LeTourneau University campus. It is very much a family affair. The Hawkins, which consist of numerous aunts, cousins and … [Read more...]

A Summer Sunrise

We just unpacked the last piece of luggage from which will more than likely be our final trip of the summer. Tomorrow kicks off football practice for our oldest and basketball camp for one of the youngest. And can you believe that one of our daughters wants to shop for school supplies today?  She just can't hold off one more day! Most of our trips this summer revolved around family. This last trip was in my hometown of Kilgore,Texas. There was some playing of golf, catching up with friends and family, a lot of eating and even a little bit of fishing. Only one child likes to … [Read more...]

The DoSeum is Here

Does your child ever come running in the house from outside and is so excited to tell you something that they can't get the words out fast enough?   You then have to tell them to slow down so you can understand what they are trying to say. Well, that's how I felt when I was touring the DoSeum with my fellow San Antonio bloggers this afternoon.  The newest family destination in town is not only educational for the kids, it's fun for the moms too.  When I called my husband and girlfriend on my way back to the office, I was struggling to come up with the best description of the exhibits. I … [Read more...]

The Magic of Rainbows

We were at a hotel this weekend right across from the Tobin Performing Arts Center. It was a birthday sleepover party for our ten year old girls and a few friends. What's not to love about eating potato chips and cupcakes, ordering pizza and swimming in a hotel  pool? We didn't think we would get to swim because of the rainstorm. Thank heavens we came prepared with games of Twister and Monopoly. I mean, they are Girl Scouts and prepared for anything! When the rain finally stopped and the sun started peeking through the clouds, I declared it was time to go swimming. I have never … [Read more...]

For the Love of Pancakes

Pancakes. I bet you just smiled. There's just something about pancakes that conjures up happy thoughts!  And this past weekend, we found the happiest pancake place in San Antonio! Pancake Joe's is located near Jefferson High School and close to downtown off of Donaldson Avenue. It's in a strip center that has no signage from the road. It took us awhile to find it but we were determined since it had come highly recommended by friends. I knew it had to be around somewhere because there were so many cars in the parking lot. (directly across from the Dollar General Store) Since the … [Read more...]

Thankful

November has been a whirlwind month for our family.   We’ve been going back and forth to Dallas to be with Nana who has been in the hospital. A couple of weeks ago, the doctors were preparing us for the worst scenario. After a very angst filed six days of biopsies and waiting for test results, we had the best of news. The doctors seemed shocked at the results.  Did you know it is possible to actually jump for joy? Good thing there were plenty of doctors and nurses on hand when I came back down! God had a different plan. Soon my mother in law will be back in her … [Read more...]

Hometown Vacation

When you live in a city of a million people, sometimes spending a little time away in a small town is the perfect summer vacation.  And that's what my family decided to do when we went to my hometown of Kilgore, Texas. We booked four nights at a local hotel and acted like tourists. Can you say free breakfast buffet? It has quickly become a tradition to get our entire Ott family together in the month of July. This summer, it was over the 4th  of July holiday. Instead of my usual vacation planning on sites like Tripadvisor, I simply called my brother John. I consider him to be … [Read more...]

When Did You Stop Dancing?

I went to a wedding this past weekend. It was held in the Dallas area where I lived for over twelve years. I made lots of friendships over that amount of time. It started out as a family trip. We booked a hotel room in Frisco that had an indoor pool. And two of our kids ended up getting a virus and stayed behind with my husband. It was just me and one of my 8 year old twin daughters, Savannah. She couldn't believe that it was going to be the two of us. It is pretty rare to spend so much time with one child when you have three children. The weather forecast called for heavy … [Read more...]

Sassy in San Antonio with Kaycie

We have week two of "Sassy in San Antonio." It's a little series on the blog that finds out what my girlfriend's favorite things are to do in town. This week, I asked Kaycie to share her thoughts on San Antonio. I first met her at playgroup when my son was about four or five and her daughters were about the same age.  I can't remember exactly but I knew the minute I met her that we would get along nicely! She's laid back and doesn't take things too seriously, and then there's that mutual love of wine! I thought it would be great to get her perspective on SA since she has moved … [Read more...]
