What’s Old is New at Hotel Emma

For the past twenty three years, I have booked a room for my husband's birthday. I try to keep it a surprise until it is time to pack our bags. Of course, I think it adds to the excitement and adventure of his special day. And most years, I have succeeded in keeping it to myself. But this year's location was hard to keep a secret.               We have stayed all over Texas in this time span. Since his birthday is around the holidays, we tend to stay close to home. From a bed and breakfast in Jefferson, the Four Seasons in … [Read more...]

The DoSeum is Here

Does your child ever come running in the house from outside and is so excited to tell you something that they can't get the words out fast enough?   You then have to tell them to slow down so you can understand what they are trying to say. Well, that's how I felt when I was touring the DoSeum with my fellow San Antonio bloggers this afternoon.  The newest family destination in town is not only educational for the kids, it's fun for the moms too.  When I called my husband and girlfriend on my way back to the office, I was struggling to come up with the best description of the exhibits. I … [Read more...]

The Magic of Rainbows

We were at a hotel this weekend right across from the Tobin Performing Arts Center. It was a birthday sleepover party for our ten year old girls and a few friends. What's not to love about eating potato chips and cupcakes, ordering pizza and swimming in a hotel  pool? We didn't think we would get to swim because of the rainstorm. Thank heavens we came prepared with games of Twister and Monopoly. I mean, they are Girl Scouts and prepared for anything! When the rain finally stopped and the sun started peeking through the clouds, I declared it was time to go swimming. I have never … [Read more...]

All Aboard

I did something a few weeks ago that I have never done before.....um, no, I didn't clean my oven. Why in the world would I ever do such a thing? I rode an Amtrak train! Or make that, we rode an Amtrak train. As I was trying to find a way back from East Texas over spring break without a car, I found myself on the Amtrak website researching the route schedule. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing or  where I was supposed to catch the train or where it would drop us off in San Antonio. And then my daughter overheard my dilemma and insisted that she join me so it could be an … [Read more...]

Maddie Mac Boutique

When one of my fellow Antonian basketball team moms handed me the card to order our t-shirts, I had no idea that I would stumble upon such a sassy treasure!  Maddie Mac Boutique has been cranking out unique and custom creations for over sixteen years! The mind behind this fun store is Maggie Ibarra-Jimenez. She started her business in 1998 after she found out she was having a daughter. It was a way to have some flexibility with her family of three. What began as making hair bows and t-shirts for girls, soon blossomed into her having to purchase the building to house her … [Read more...]

Women Who Inspire

I often hesitate to use the word "inspiring" as a description of an event. People are inspired by so many different things. Yesterday, at Women in the World Texas, it was very apparent that the entire sold out audience was inspired by what took place in six hours at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre. One by one they spoke.   There was no big production stage; only words, powerful words.  They came from all walks of life and various backgrounds.  No politics. No hidden agendas. Only words.  Even at the end … [Read more...]

Women in the World Texas

Can you spare a day out of your busy schedule to be inspired? What if I told you that it is an event that up until now, has only been held in New York City? It is headed down south to Texas. And of all the cities in Texas, San Antonio is the one playing host, or make that hostess! Tina Brown's Women in the World Texas will gather some of the most well-known and powerful women to take the stage at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre.  Not only will you have the opportunity to hear discussions from the Texas women: Former Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Ambassador Karen Hughes, Eva … [Read more...]

A Tiu Steppi Celebration

There is nothing more I love than going out to eat for a celebration. You don't have to cook and someone else does the dishes. And you can usually get some ideas for recipes to try at home, or make that my husband can try at home! Let's just say he's the better cook in our house! When your kids ask when daddy's getting home so he will be the one to make dinner, then you just know! It's OK, I've learned to embrace it! We went out last weekend to celebrate my son's 16th birthday. We had been out all day running errands and ended up at the mall. We wanted to get out of the crowds and go to a … [Read more...]

Intimate Impressionism at the McNay

Close your eyes and imagine a world without art. Did your mind immediately picture something grey and colorless? Did your emotions suddenly change to being more somber? For most people, art is life. And lucky for those of us that call San Antonio home, art can be found everywhere. An art exhibit just opened in San Antonio that is anything but colorless. Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery of Art is visiting the McNay Art Museum until January 4, 2015.  San Antonio is one of only five cities in the world that will showcase this extraordinary collection of … [Read more...]

Can you Lobby if you Don’t Hobby?

Hobby Lobby just opened up a new store near our house. We've been watching it go up since it's so close to the gym, movie theatre, Home Goods and Nordstrom Rack near our house. That shopping center is almost retail nirvana now. I have absolutely no idea why I like Hobby Lobby so much. I don't craft. I don't sew. I'm not the greatest at projects that involve gluing anything. I scrapbooked once. It was at a friend's party. I did two pages and then got sidetracked talking to everybody. And then I did like any good friend would do, I bought the most expensive scrapbooking package from her … [Read more...]
