Yaghi’s New York Pizzeria

Yaghi's

Friday nights are  “family fun nights” at our house. We let the kids pick where we order pizza and the movie we watch on Netflix. Lately, we have been taking the pizza to the pool. They usually pick places like Papa John’s, Papa Murphy’s or Pizza Hut. Every now and then my husband and I use our veto power as parents to pick the place when we have grown tired of the aforementioned chain pizza places! Last night was one of those nights. We wanted to try a new place that had recently opened up in an HEB shopping center near our house. They claim to be a “New York Pizzeria” which … [Read more...]

Staycation Day 2 in Blanco,Texas

Snapseed (8)

Day 2 of Operation Staycation found us in the Hill Country town of Blanco. It is just a short 50 mile drive from San Antonio but seems like a world away. I would often visit Blanco on business when I had clients there and loved the slow pace and laid back attitude of all the people that I interacted with. Seeing the swimmers at Blanco State Park from my view off of Highway 281 over the years, made me want to take my kids to explore the beautiful scenery. My family finally made the visit on Sunday. I am now regretting why we haven't taken them before now.  It was indeed a wonderful day … [Read more...]

Bakery Lorraine has Perfected the Pastry

photo (20)

We finally made it out to the Quarry Farmers Market. We have been going to the Pearl Farmers Market which is held on Saturday since it opened but this was our very first time at the Sunday Quarry Market. We were anxious to try some baked goods that we had been hearing so much about that can only be found once a week at the market. My husband was so inspired by the pastries that he wanted to blog about them.   The following post is by the big Stud aka the hubby and the baker in our house. I just took the pictures and enjoyed our morning pastries! I'm kind of sassy like … [Read more...]

Hoover’s Cooking

photo(17)

I bet you think this is a food blog since I have been posting about food places so much. Well, we eat out a lot in the summer. We have a ton of out of town visitors since we live in such a tourist destination plus it is really hard to turn on the oven when it's 100 degrees from June until the end of August! And there is the little fact that I hate to cook. I mean, I really hate to cook. We drove to Austin on Sunday to drop our boy off at UT basketball camp. I probably took 100 pictures of him to record the moment of his checking in at his first overnight camp. He was so embarrassed. I … [Read more...]

The Original Donut Shop

DonutSign

Today was our first summertime visit to the Original Donut Shop. Years ago, we first discovered this iconic place when we wondered why so many cars were lined up for tacos at a donut spot. It was intriguing to say the least, so we pulled in their parking lot to discover it for ourselves. We quickly learned what the long lines were all about! It is now our family tradition to go the restaurant in the summer. It is located about 7 miles from our house; which is probably a good thing because we would eat there more often. We choose to take our out of town visitors there so we can be as giddy … [Read more...]

The Ultimate Corn on the Cob

DSC_0365

We had the best corn on the cob at Two Steps Restaurant in San Antonio (pictured above) It isn't exactly low calorie but it is so good. Our kids have been begging their Dad to try and duplicate it at home. They know who to ask, I have no cooking skills. We are giving it a whirl for a Memorial Day side dish. It might not be the exact version but it will be hard to make it taste bad with all of these ingredients.   Here is what we are using and we will probably triple the recipe:   4 ears of corn with husks removed but remaining on the end for grilling purposes(the kids … [Read more...]

Lunch at Pam’s Patio Kitchen

photo (88)

In my former life as an account executive in the mortgage business, I could tell you any restaurant in town to take a client under any set of circumstances. I believe it does make a difference as to whether you want to build a relationship, apologize for something that might have gone wrong, or just thank them for supporting you. Each place sets a tone based on their food and ambiance. My husband used to tease me and tell people who asked what his wife did for a living, “She does lunch and she does it well!” When someone called me the other day to ask me a place to take her mother in … [Read more...]

Two Step In for an Unforgettable Experience

DSC_0380

Nestled among the hustle and bustle of 1604 and a retail shopping center is an oasis of great food. Never have I been more surprised about a restaurant than I was last week when I met someone for lunch at Two Step at their suggestion. What I had planned as a quick lunch soon turned into over two hours of one of the most pleasant dining experiences I have had in a very long time. My lunch companion and I were having such a relaxing time on the patio that we were both almost late for our next appointments.   The building itself is the renovated Ruempel homestead built in the 1850's. … [Read more...]

Texas Sheet Cake

DSC_0303

I have been craving this cake since Saturday night. We had an impromptu picnic in the front yard with our neighbors and somewhere the topic of chocolate sheet cake came up. The kids played basketball. We ordered pizza. The parents had a glass of wine. OK, Stella and I had the wine. I have no idea why I feel guilty about this, a girl can drink some wine. It must be the Catholic guilt thing. I am constantly confessing my sins. Some people have a huge box, bulging with recipes they have collected over the years. I have some that are paper clipped together. I hate to cook, but I will share with … [Read more...]

The Bright Shawl-A Tea Room and So Much More

caesarsalad

I met a friend at the Bright Shawl for lunch recently. I haven't been in awhile so I was excited to see if anything had changed since my last visit. I spent a lot of time in that beautiful building. I was a member of the Junior League of San Antonio for years and I am currently a sustainer. A sustainer is basically a "retired" member that still pays dues to support the League. I love this organization. I knew exactly four people in San Antonio when we moved here over 14 years ago. I had given up my career to be a stay at home Mom and had a 4 month old baby and a husband that worked all the … [Read more...]
