We’re Playing Basketball

Our kids are in all kinds of sports. As parents, we feel like it keeps them busy and out of trouble, or at least we hope so!

My daughter just finished volleyball and less than two weeks later was scheduled her first basketball game. She’s played it since she was in first grade. I think it’s because she watched her big brother play so much. Her daddy coached her team for about five years until she hit middle school this year. He always emphasized the importance of playing defense. It was hard at times because most little kids just want to shoot the ball. It’s so much more exciting to them!

Anyway, my point of all of this is to tell you about their first game. I was so excited to see all the girls play again. Some of them have been playing together for a while but quite a few of them were new to the school and the game of basketball!

Their school combined the 5th and 6th graders together and placed them in a league with 7th graders. They all realized that they would be playing a team that could be much taller and faster than them.

And my biggest fear was realized right away when one of the mom’s texted me while I was still in the parking lot and said, “this team looks like giants compared to ours!”

When I walked in the gym to see for myself, I gasped and immediately said a little prayer to keep my baby girl safe! Instinctively, that’s what moms do.

Well, our girls on the other hand were not the least bit intimidated, or at least they didn’t show it.

From the moment of tip off, they played their game. It was quite the sight to see. They were guarding the opposing team like they were the ones that were 6 feet tall, not the other way around.

And when the score got a little close, Coach Amanda called a time out and I overheard her telling the girls, “just keep on playing your game!”

Well, it worked. We never gave up the lead and ended up winning by six points.

I think the whole gym realized that something special had just happened;

The team that from all appearances should have lost the game, ended up being the victor.

Sometimes you need reminders in life. And this one is from a group of 10 and 11-year old girls:

If you believe in yourself, anything is possible.

Now, let’s play some more ball.

Stay Sassy Y’all.
